Lake Geneva elementary school students and their parents got a dose of weird and not-so-weird science Feb. 7.
About 275 students and parents showed up for Family Science Night at Lake Geneva Middle School, said Ann Quaerna, one of the teachers who helps organize the event.
Science teachers from around the district prepare activities for students and parents, she said.

“We have teachers who set up hands-on science tables,” Quaerna said.
Among some of the 27 science tables, students could work on simple chemistry experiments or maneuver small Lego robots.
One of the science night’s attractions is a chemistry show featuring Badger High School chemistry teachers Barry Mess and Aaron Burg.
The two teachers set up some gee-whiz chemistry effects and some activities in which the younger kids can participate, Burg said in a telephone interview.
This year three Badger students helped with the show, Quaerna said.
Burg said that chemistry honors students at Badger proposed several eye-popping chemical effects with an eye toward safety and showmanship.
One of the big effects in this year’s show was elephant toothpaste, said Burg.
Using concentrated hydrogen peroxide as the main ingredient to create a free-flowing tooth pasty concoction, the students added color and a prop that looked like an elephant-sized toothpaste tube.
